Tasting notes

Sordo has access to some of the best vineyard sites in the appellation, including this celebrated vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. The Sordo 2016 Barolo Monprivato delivers a rich and open-knit presentation with dark aromas of blackberry, plum and truffle-infused earth. The wine shows precision, concentration and personality, all followed by a ferrous tone of iron ore or rusty nail. To my palate, this wine offers the best tannic management. It offers distinct firmness without the bitterness. This is the most complete of these various new releases from Sordo, although I would still recommend extra aging time to allow it to flesh out and soften. Monica Larner

A solid, tannic red with dried-strawberry and cranberry character and some tobacco. It’s full-bodied with plenty of phenolic strength. Chewy and long. Give it three or four years to soften. Better after 2023.
