2017 Domaine Jean & Gilles Lafouge Meursault Les Meix Chavaux, Cote de Beaune, France 750ml

The brilliant 2017 Meursault Les Meix Chavaux hails from vines that are almost ninety years old—likely making them the oldest in the climat—and which neighbor one of Jean-Marc Roulot's parcels in cool, easterly-exposed site. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, white flowers and crushed chalk, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tense and racy, with incisive acids and chewy dry extract, concluding with a long and intense finish. More tensile than the ampler Casse-Têtes, this is the purist's choice chez Lafouge this year. 91-93 Points

2017 Domaine Jean & Gilles Lafouge Meursault Les Casse Tetes, Cote de Beaune, France 750ml

The 2017 Meursault Les Casses-Têtes is superb, unwinding in the glass with notes of lemon oil, blanched almonds, tart pear and crisp peach. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with more flesh and amplitude than the domaine's regular Meursault but similar tension and cut, concluding with a stony finish. This is a terrific bottling of Meursault that flies decidedly under the radar, so it's well worth seeking out. 91-93

2017 Domaine Jean & Gilles Lafouge Auxey-Duresses Les Boutonniers, Cote de Beaune, France 750ml

The 2017 Auxey-Duresses Les Boutonniers is lovely, bursting with expressive aromas of pear, citrus oil and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and fleshy, with lovely purity, succulent acids and a lingering, mineral finish. This is Auxey-Duresses at its best and a wine that will rival many a Meursault for a fraction of the price. 90-92 Points

2017 Domaine Rapet Pere et Fils Sous Fretille, Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru, France 750ml

From one hectare of vines planted in the 1960s, the 2017 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Sous Frétille is the insider's choice chez Rapet, and a wine I purchased for my own cellar. Offering up aromas of ripe citrus fruit, acacia honey, wet stones and crisp yellow apple, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and beautifully precise, with superb energy, good concentration and a long, mineral finish. Though it isn't as structured or muscular as the Corton-Charlemagne, it nips at its heels.

2017 Domaine Rapet Pere et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune, France 750ml

With the 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Rapet has produced his finest white since 2014. The wine opens in the glass with a classy nose of ripe lemons, green apple, white flowers and crushed chalk, framed by subtle hints of oatmeal and beeswax. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with excellent concentration and broad shoulders, but also promising structural tension and reserve. The long, chalky finish is penetrating and intense. This is well worth seeking out.

2017 Pernot-Belicard Perrieres, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, France 750ml

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Perrières is excellent, revealing scents of waxy lemon rind, mandarin oil, grapefruit, crushed chalk and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and concentrated with a fleshy core controlled by tangy acids and a precise, mineral finish. Of Pernot's three Puligny premiers crus, it's the most serious and structurally reserved.

2017 Pernot-Belicard Champ Canet, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, France 750ml

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Canet is very impressive, revealing lovely aromas of waxy lemon rind, mandarin, dried white flowers and a subtle touch of musky peach on the upper register. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, glossy and textural, with a fleshy, dramatic core of fruit underpinned by an attractive line of animating acidity, concluding with a saline finish. This is a front-loaded but serious Champ Canet that should offer a broad drinking window.

2006 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, USA 750ml

The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is stunning. A wine that is only now beginning to shed its tannin, the 2006 stands out for its vibrancy and energy. All of the classic Screaming Eagle notes are in the glass, but with a little more edge and cut than in most vintages. Sweet red berries, crushed rocks, flowers and spice box are alive in the glass. Over time, hints of sage, mint rosemary and pencil shavings add complexity. The 2006 is a decidedly cool-weather wine with less opulence than either the 2007 or 2009, but it is absolutely singing today.
