Domaine Bonneau du Martray

Corton-Charlemagne

It’s possible that there is Chardonnay that rivals Corton-Charlemagne, but I think we can all agree that there is nothing that exceeds it. The phrase “fit for a king” can be applied literally here: the vineyards were once owned by the Emporer Charlemagne, who in 775 gifted the land to the Abbey of Saint-Andoche de Saulieu. This is a Grand Cru that lives up to its formidable reputation, and we never tire of these profoundly dazzling whites.

Take the 1990 Bonneau du Martray—this wine is vibrant yet ethereal, sensual yet restrained. The 1992 vintage from the same estate is equally exquisite, and a good example of the appellation’s elegantly structured power. Both these wines are at their apex—it doesn’t get any better than this. If you’re looking for something for your long term collection, many of the recent Corton-Charlemagne vintages show great promise: for instance, the 2012 Colin-Morey Pierre-Yves, and the 2014 vintages from Colin-Morey and Bonneau du Martray. But we’re dedicated to collecting Corton-Charlemagne, and our list is long…Don’t hesitate to ask us for recommendations specific to your palate or special occasion.
