Tasting notes

Note: from a .28 ha parcel of 35+ year old vines

Producer note: Paul Pernot was unable to attend the tasting but his granddaughter Alvina (see the reviews for her wines immediately above) capably presented the wines. She noted that "we definitely suffered from the April frost and poor flowering as our yields in some sectors were down as much as 70%. Thankfully, the yields in others were down no more than 10%. Given how hot and dry the 2019 vintage was, the choice of the picking date was critical. We chose to begin picking on the 11th of September and speed was also critical as we picked as fast as reasonably possible. We were aided considerably by how clean the fruit was as there was essentially no sorting necessary other than the odd leaf or insect. Potential alcohols came in between 14 to 14.5% but with surprisingly good acidities that made all the difference in maintaining the proper balance. The 2019s are concentrated but light on their feet and should drink well both young and with bottle age." The 2019s were bottled in July 2020 using the Diam brand composite cork. I found the quality of the Pernot 2019s to be excellent and given their relatively reasonable pricing in most markets, they're worth checking out.

Tasting note: Touches of honeysuckle, pear, acacia and discreet spice wisps serve as an elegant introduction to the rich, opulent and sappy medium weight flavors that are suave, even seductive, on the compact, balanced and impressively long and complex finale. This classy effort should be approachable young if desired.

Domaine Paul Pernot

We are delighted to announce that the first of the 2017 white Burgundies have arrived from Domaine Paul Pernot. Michael Apstein writes: "The 2017 whites are consistently excellent, delivering energy and a sense of place. Not as tightly wound as the 2010s, the 2017s are more similar to the charming and thoroughly enjoyable 2014s... Indeed Paul Pernot, one of the most consistent names in Puligny Montrachet, made exceptional white wines in 2017 that are zesty, penetrating and powerful, but retain Pernot's hallmark of finesse." We highly recommend these wines!
